http://freestyleforum.net. It had been raining hard for the past week. When the rain stopped I took out the fire toys (fire poi and firechucks) and practiced a bit. Tried single and double firechucks as well as fire poi and three-headed fire poi (all homemade). My uncle died while I was editing this, so this vid is for him.
My uncle, Gaudencio Paguia, former Dean of the College of Dentistry of MCU and past president of the Philippine Dental Association, passed away while I was making this vid. This one's for him.
Happy birthday to me... Happy birthday to me... I was on my way to Kris and Moira's wedding when I saw Puti aka Muning aka Whitey in front of the Main Library. Waiting for a mouse? O_o;;
So anyway, my birthdays are probably getting weirder by the year. I got some useful stuff from my mom, sister and nephews. I also got stuff for myself. Something for the martial artist in me, something for the inner geek in me, and something for the skill freak in me.
I got myself a pair of ball-bearing nunchucks. I bought these the day I bought the stationary bike at Toby's for the house. They had a pile of nunchucks in their martial arts section and I think I surprised the cashier and the manager when I said I'd like to add the two nunchucks. I think I scared them when I said I'd like to test them before they punch it in (hey, I have to be sure the balance is okay and that the swing / rotation is sweet). I think I awed them a bit when I did flips and rotations. I assume they usually see guys only do swings and transfers. Anyway, I love these guys to death.
I also bought an 80Gb hard disk and an enclosure for the increasing number of files I generate. And lastly...
Yup. It's a unicycle. A new skill / circus toy for me to learn. And I know it's gonna hurt really bad trying to learn this one-wheeled wonder. O_o;; I already fell about a dozen times last weekend just trying to balance myself.
This post just aggregates my vids and the vids of Carina on the simple fire jam at the UP CHK, July 20, 2007 with Christian, JR, Jeho and Carina. (some more to be added later according to Carina)
We used to meet for poi practice Saturday mornings. But since work and studies got in our way, we moved the time to Friday nights. Last Friday, I got a text msg from JR on my cell phone before the meet. It read "BRING YOUR FIRE TOYS." So, being a good boy that I am (or good gorilla), I brought my fire poi... And my firechucks.
It was so nice being able to see JR spin fire. Mr Suave kasi yun sa fire poi. Hehehe. UP CHK is the College of Human Kinetics, where all the athletic people are. We were spinning fire near the weights room and JR's friends Jeho and Christian joined us and spun fire in between sets. It was also Carina's Baptism of Fire: her First Burn.

4. Using soldering iron, punch 4 holes on top of each rod (2 holes each side). This is where cord will be tied. 5. Slide on the foam cylnders and tie cord (desired length). Cord tie reference: www.sakuramartialarts.com/Sakura_Martial_Arts_How_To_Tie_... 6. Slide foam to cover holes.
1. Materials: Aluminum rods (thin or thick), steel nail or drill, metal file, screwdriver, pliers, small nuts and bolts, chain (desired length), 2 extra chain links, 6 or more meters of cotton rope (length depends on rope thickness, better option would be kevlar rope for longer burns). 2. Saw 2 aluminum rods to desired length. Punch 2 holes on each end of the rod (all / both ends) with steel nail or drill (support aluminum by placing metal core when hammering to prevent deforming). 3 and 4. Attach the two rods to each other via chain with nuts and bolts. Cut excess bolt length and finish off as illustrated in SativaDust's www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQbDGsuoaQ0 (file off excess sharp metal to prevent skin cuts). 5. Attach the extra chain links to each of the bottom ends of the rods using the same process. These will serve as the anchors where the monkeyfists will be attached. 6. Tie the rope to the chainlink with simple knot. This will serve as the core of the monkeyfist. 7. Start forming the monkeyfist knot as illustrated in Home of Poi's www.homeofpoi.com/articles/monkey_fist.php. 8 and 9. I use extra rods to maintain the form of the knots at different stages of the knot-tying process. Makes the tying easier. 10. I also use a screwdriver to insert the rope towards the end of knot-tying when the loops are smaller. I also use pliers when pulling the knot tigher. 11. The monkey fist looks like a volleyball with six-sides. Modification of the monkeyfist knot made by situating the anchor in the middle of one of the sides instead of between three sides. (I think of it as dice. I situate the rod where the "One" dot is located instead of the corner of the dice where three sides meet.) 12. Monkey fist knot before tightening. 13. Tightened monkey fist knot. 14. Finished monkeyfist firechucks below prototype with braided cotton wick.
Note: May work on torches, jo and bo firestaffs as well. (I'm actually poofed after making this. Pulling the knots tight is tiring.)
Crappy webcam vid only. Just charting move progress since I joined http://freestyleforum.net. Front to back, check. Back to front, check. Couldn't do continuous wristspins (front - back - back - back) with the newer and longer chucks, whether cord, fixed chain or ballbearing chain. I went back to my oldest and heavy fixed chain chucks with shorter rods and chain. Surprise! It works. So now I have to figure out if I have to decrease chain and cord length on the other chucks. O_o;; Back to practice. (I forgot to practice the left hand.)
